How An Engineer’s Little Mistake Nearly Broke The Entire Internet

The internet is a beautiful place and many of us have established an unbreakable relationship with the same. However, it looks like that even a wrong key press can prove to be fatal for the worldwide internet infrastructure. The same happened when an engineer of TeliaSonera–an internet infrastructure company–committed a little mistake. S weden-based internet infrastructure company TeliaSonera is one of the few companies that are responsible for maintaining the basic infrastructure of the internet. TeliaSonera’s transatlantic cable network plays a major role in connecting the US to various European countries. A recent internet outage has affected many services like WhatsApp, Facebook, Slack, Reddit, and CloudFlare. After this massive outage was reported across many countries, TeliaSonera sent a note to other network operators and informed them about the mishap. German scientists transmit data at a world record 6 Gigabit per second over a distance of 37 Kms They say nothing is impossible for humans and scientists from Germany have proved it by achieving world record data transmission speeds ten times faster than what has been achieved so far. Researchers from the University of Stuttgart, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF, achieved a new world record in wireless data transmission by sending the contents of a conventional DVD in under ten seconds using radio waves. In other words, they have set a new record in wireless transmission using millimetre-waves to transmit at a data rate of 6 Gigabit per second over a distance of 37 kilometers, which is 10 times faster than any data transmission method. The extremely high data rates of 6 Gbit/s was accomplished through efficient transmitters and receivers at a radio frequency of 71-76 GigaHertz in the so-called...

U.S. Appeals Court Upholds Net Neutrality Rules In Full Various public interest groups and free speech activities held victory celebrations when a federal appeals court on Tuesday fully upheld the so-called Open Internet rules , regulations backing the principle of net neutrality. Net neutrality has been a bone of contention between free Internet advocacy groups and telecom companies ever since the Internet boom in 2000s. The telecom companies want to milk Internet for windfall gains while most activists want that phone and cable companies should treat all of the traffic on their networks equally — no blocking or slowing their competitors, and no fast lanes for companies that can pay more. Tuesday’s verdict by the The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit was a clear cut victory for free Internet and Federal Communications Commission as it rejected the petition filed by telecom, cable and wireless industry associations alongside AT&T, CenturyLink and severa...

This $6 hacking tool can get you entry into any hotel room and cash registers

This tiny $6 hacking tool lets you break into hotel rooms or compromise point-of-sale (PoS) systems A security researcher has developed a hacking tool which allows anybody to break into hotel rooms with ease. The tool is also capable of compromising point-of-sale (PoS) systems used by almost all retailers and hotels. Rapid7 security researcher Weston Hecker revealed the tool at Black Hat USA. Hecker said that he assembled the tool with off-the-shelf components and cost him only $6 to build. As reported by Forbes , the device can read and duplicate hotel keys, but if a potential hacker is really keen on disrupting a hotel chain, the $6 tool can also be used to “brute force” attack every guest room in the building — by guessing the keys to each room. Hecker’s tool works by guessing possible combinations used by the hotel room lock.  After being placed near a door’s card reader, Hecker’s device can make 48 guesses a minute and additional hardware antennas prevent...
