Facebook’s new anti-clickbait algorithm buries bogus headlines

Image
Facebook Pages and websites that frequently withhold, exaggerate or distort information in their link headlines will disappear from News Feed thanks to a new anti-clickbait algorithm  that’s now rolling out. Facebook manually classified tens of thousands of headlines with a clickbaitiness score to train the new algorithm. Now it can detect headlines like “When She Looked Under Her Couch And Saw THIS… I Was SHOCKED!”; “He Put Garlic In His Shoes And What Happens Next Is Hard To Believe”; or “The Dog Barked At The Deliveryman And His Reaction Was Priceless.” Rather than just assigning a binary “Yes, clickbait” or “not clickbait,” each story gets a score about how egregious it is. The algorithm primarily looks for phrases often used in clickbait headlines but not in legitimate headlines, similar to email spam filters. The higher the clickbait likelihood, the more the algorithm punishes the entire Page that shared them or site they link to by making all their posts o...

AROUND(): A Google Search Operator You May Not Know About

Image
Here is this handy operator developed by  Daniel Russell   which comes in as a handy trick when you are googling stuff. It’s a handy trick, particularly when you’re looking for the combination of search terms (containing two or more search keywords) when one dominates the results, but you’re interested in the relationship between two query terms. T he AROUND( n) operator (used in uppercase, as shown with n = a number) is an undocumented Google search operator that will help you find documents where the distance between two search terms is around ‘n’. The higher the number ‘n’ the less is the proximity between the search words. Here’s an example:A research query that says “hot springs” will mostly show search results about geographical hot springs (because these two words are maximized in use together than with separation between them). However, if we modify the query to look like “hot AROUND(5) springs,” you get results where the two terms are wr...

Tired With Slow WiFi? Your Good Old FM Is Here To Help You

Facing slower WiFi speed due to network congestion and signal interference is a very common problem. However, researchers have found a way to use FM Radio signals to solve this problem. L iving in a crowded neighborhood can seriously affect your WiFi speed . For those who don’t know, you and the people living around you, have a limited wireless frequency channels that are used by the WiFi networks to move the data. So, if there are more people around you using WiFi, there are good chances that the networks will overlap and kill your speed. This is a very common problem, specially if you are living in a apartment. To solve this problem, Aleksandar Kuzmanovic, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, is trying something new. He describes the root cause of this problem as none of the WiFi devices have a reference point about the activities of the other WiFi devices. This lack of coordination and timing creates ...

OWERCFG: How To Check Battery Capacity And Battery Health Report In Windows Using CMD

Image
This article shows you how to access the energy report and battery report of your battery in Windows using powercfg in CMD. This will allow you to check your current battery capacity, battery errors, and usage sessions saved by Windows. T he existence of batteries has played a major role in the development of portable computers like laptops and netbooks. A normal laptop comes with a battery backup of around 6 to 7 hours on an average. However, some of the high-priced ones have enough juice to entertain you for 11 to 12 hours on a single charge. These batteries, mostly lithium-ion type, decrease in ca pacity over time. It is quite possible that a new laptop that can run for 6 hours on the battery may reach only 2 hours after a couple of years of usage. Now, you can’t stop the battery decay process because it’s a natural phenomenon but you can keep an eye on the battery capacity from time to time. This would help you know when it is the right time to purchase a new one...

How To Increase Wi-Fi Speed by Choosing Correct Wi-Fi Channel

Image
Still stuck buffering your You-Tube videos? Agonising over the long time it is taking for the page to load while sulking at the screen and cursing your Internet Service Provider? Worry not! Here is a tweak that might help you to increase Wi-Fi speed. If you have been surfing the internet in the hope of finding a solution to help overcome this problem you might have encountered the word channel. Most of the Wi-Fi home  networks use a narrow radio frequency range of around 2.4GHz for signal transmission. This range has been distributed further into a number of smaller bands or channels, similar to television channels.  There are 14 channels designated in the 2.4 GHz range spaced 5 MHz apart (with the exception of a 12 MHz spacing before channel 14). Increase Wi-Fi speed by choosing right channel This paltry signal range leads to overlapping of channels which combined with the fact that other electronic devices such as microwave ovens, co...

Meet an all-new Hacker’s Search Engine similar to Shodan – Censys.

Meet an all-new Hacker’s Search Engine similar to Shodan – Censys . At the end of last month, security researchers from SEC Consult found that the lazy manufacturers of home routers and Internet of Things (IoT) devices have been re-using the same set of hard-coded cryptographic keys , leaving around 3 millions of IoT devices open to mass hijacking. But how did the researchers get this number? Researchers uncovered these devices with the help of Censys – a new search engine that daily scans the whole Internet for all the vulnerable devices. Censys Maintains Complete Database of Everything on The Internet Censys is similar to hacker's search engine Shodan , which is designed specifically to locate any devices that have been carelessly plugged into the Internet without much attempt at preventing unauthorized access. However, Censys employs a more advanced method to find vulnerabilities in the devices and make the Internet a safer place. ...

Forget about security! It turns out that the Chip-and-PIN cards are just as easy to clone as magnetic stripe cards.

Forget about security! It turns out that the Chip-and-PIN cards are just as easy to clone as magnetic stripe cards. It took researchers just a simple chip and pin hack to withdraw up to $50,000 in cash from an ATM in America in under 15 minutes. We have been told that EMV ( Europay, MasterCard and Visa ) chip-equipped cards provides an extra layer of security which makes these cards more secure and harder to clone than the old magnetic stripe cards. But, it turns out to be just a myth. A team of security engineers from Rapid7 at Black Hat USA 2016 conference in Las Vegas demonstrated how a small and simple modifications to equipment would be enough for attackers to bypass the Chip-and-PIN protections and enable unauthorized transactions. The demonstration was part of their presentation titled, "Hacking Next-Gen ATMs: From Capture to Washout," [ PDF ]. The team of researchers was able to show the audience an ATM spitting out hundreds of dollars in ca...

On this day 25 years ago, August 6, 1991, the world's first website went live to the public from a lab in the Swiss Alps. So Happy 25th Birthday, WWW! It's the Silver Jubilee of the world's first website. The site was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee , the father of the World Wide Web (WWW), and was dedicated to information on the World Wide Web project. The world's first website, which ran on a NeXT computer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), can still be visited today, more than two decades after its creation. The first website address is http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html . "The WorldWideWeb (W3) is a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents," the world's first public website reads, going on to explain how others can also create their own web pages. "The project started with the philosophy that much academic in...
